A
petition has been presented to the recently elected Grapeville-Colleyvine
Independent School Board (GCISD) to restrict certain books that are allowed in
the school. The group that has
brought this to the attention of the school board feels strongly that schools
should not be exposing students to inappropriate material.
In response to this petition, the school board has decided to entertain
the idea of possibly banning certain books.
Some of the books the GCISD School Board is looking into banning from the
school district are the following: |

Banning
these books from all GCISD schools would mean removing these books from all of
the GCISD libraries, prohibiting their use in the curriculum, and prohibiting
students and teachers from having the books on school property. The GCISD School
Board takes this issue seriously and will conduct a public hearing on this
important issue at its next meeting. |

The
idea of banning books is not a new concept.
For hundreds of years, people have sought to protect the community from
controversial ideas by burning books. At
the same time world leaders, like Winston Churchill, have sought to advocate the
free flow of ideas. |
